Bicycling

Exploring on bicycle is the really the best way to get around and see Mackinac. Bring your own bikes or rent some on the Island and ride the eight mile perimeter route along M-185. It’s by far the easiest and most popular ride on Mackinac. It’s mostly flat, very scenic, and takes about an hour without stopping. Bikes may be rented at Ryba’s Bike Rentals with rates starting at around $5 per hour.

In the center of the Island, British Landing Rd. branches out to numerous other trails and bike paths. Take Crooked Tree Road to see Sugarloaf then continue on to Arch Rock and the East Bluff. For another good ride, by the cemetery take the road up to Fort Holmes for a spectacular view from the highest point on the Island.

For a more aggressive bike ride, Tranquil Bluff Trail has some of the most difficult mountain bike terrain found anywhere. Some sections are extremely difficult but beautiful cedar groves, steep climbs, limestone cliffs and scenic overlooks make this an expert ride with beautiful conditions. Mackinac Wheels rents many different types of bikes, including higher quality mountain bikes with multiple gears.

Always use caution, stay to the right of the road or trail and remember horses and pedistrians have right of way. Don’t forget to wear your helmet!
